2025 Mediterranean Islands Guide: Morning Walks, Afternoon Swims

A Note on Difficulty Levels for Walking Routes:

  • Easy: Walks that generally do not exceed 30-60 minutes, on clearly marked paths with little incline, suitable for everyone.
  • Medium: Natural trails that usually last 1-3 hours, with some inclines and occasionally uneven terrain. A basic level of fitness may be required.
  • Hard: Routes that can last longer than 3 hours, involving significant elevation changes, requiring good fitness and sometimes experience, and where caution is advised.

1. Corfu, Greece: Venetian Grace and Ionian Green

Corfu, Greece - View of the Ionian Sea through olive trees

From the shade of olive trees to the Ionian Sea... Corfu welcomes you in 2025 with morning walks and enchanting bays!

When I first set foot on Corfu, what struck me most was the unique harmony between the island's lush green nature and its Venetian architecture. For an energetic start to the day, a climb to Angelokastro Castle is a fantastic option. This route, approximately 310 metres, can be considered Medium difficulty and is particularly invigorating in the cool of the morning. Upon reaching the summit, the breathtaking view overlooking Corfu's northwest coast makes every effort worthwhile. The sight of the Ionian Sea filtering through the olive trees is truly captivating. Don't forget to bring water and a hat, as the midday sun quickly makes its presence felt.

After this delightful walk, you can head to Paleokastritsa Beach to cool off. This area, consisting of six beautiful coves, is like a painting with its emerald green waters and impressive rock formations. If you wish, you can join boat tours to hidden caves and take swimming breaks at unique spots, especially La Grotta.

Where to Stay in Corfu? When it comes to accommodation in Corfu, my personal favourites are boutique hotels in quieter villages near Paleokastritsa, or restored old stone houses converted into guesthouses that reflect the island's local texture. There's nothing like waking up to the blue of the Ionian Sea. If you're looking for a lively atmosphere combined with historical charm, you might consider characterful hotels in Venetian-style buildings in Corfu Town (Kerkyra); being in the heart of the city also has its own pleasures.

2. Menorca, Spain: An Oasis of Peace, A Thousand Shades of Turquoise

Cala Mitjana bay in Menorca, Spain

Summer 2025 in Menorca’s Cala Mitjana bay; starts with morning walks, pine forests, and turquoise sea, and ends in perfect tranquillity.

Menorca stands out among the Balearic Islands for its unique tranquillity and untouched nature. The rhythm of life here is slower, making the island a special place to relax and connect with nature. A short stroll along the historic coastal path, Camí de Cavalls, which encircles the island, is perfect for capturing Menorca's spirit. The stretch from Cala Galdana to Cala Mitjana, which I make a point of visiting on some mornings, is a very Easy and pleasant trail of about 25-30 minutes, accompanied by the refreshing scent of pine trees.

Upon reaching Cala Mitjana, you'll be greeted by that picture-postcard view embraced by white sands and turquoise waters. After the morning walk, to immerse yourself in the clear waters here or simply sit on the sand and soak in Menorca's serene atmosphere... This is one of those pure moments of peace the island offers.

Where to Stay in Menorca? In Menorca's rural areas, "agroturismos" (rural tourism farmhouses) nestled among olive groves and fields are ideal for those seeking an authentic experience; they offer a wonderful opportunity to witness the island's local life up close. If you prefer to be near the sea, there are also chic boutique hotels in coves like Cala Galdana or Santo Tomas that respect the island's natural architecture. In historic town centres like Ciutadella or Mahon, staying in impressive hotels converted from old mansions offers a unique experience for those wanting to feel the island's historical fabric.

3. Vis, Croatia: The Adriatic's Hidden Treasure

Srebrna Beach on Vis Island, Croatia

Swim in the clear waters of Srebrna Beach in Croatia’s hidden paradise, Vis, and let the island's natural charm lighten your summer of 2025.

Vis, shining in the turquoise waters of the Adriatic, is one of Croatia's most intriguing islands. Having been closed off to the outside world for many years, it has managed to preserve its unspoiled nature and authentic atmosphere. A walk of about an hour from the town of Komiža towards Tito's old tunnels, with an Easy-Medium difficulty, reveals both the island's natural beauties and interesting remnants shedding light on its recent history. The peaceful courtyard of St. Nicholas' Monastery and the green hills stretching into the island's interior make this walk even more meaningful.

In the afternoon, Srebrna Beach (Silver Beach) is a wonderful stop to connect with the cool Adriatic waters. Named after its silver-coloured pebbles that shimmer in the sun, this beach stands out with its clear water and calm environment. For a more adventurous experience, you should definitely see Stiniva Cove, considered one of the world's most impressive coves, entered through a narrow passage by boats departing from Komiža.

Where to Stay in Vis? For an authentic accommodation experience on Vis, I recommend apartments in traditional stone houses or small family-run guesthouses in the towns of Komiža or Vis. The pleasure of starting the day in a room with a balcony overlooking the harbour is something else. If you're looking for a more secluded holiday, you can also find rental houses with their own kitchens right by the sea in the hidden coves in the south of the island; such a getaway allows you to feel the tranquillity of Vis right from its heart.

4. Gozo, Malta: Island of Legends and Red Sands

Ramla Bay on Gozo Island, Malta

Are you ready for a 2025 holiday on Gozo Island, starting with a walk in the mythological atmosphere of Ramla Bay and ending with relaxation on its red sands?

Gozo, Malta's quieter and greener sibling, captivates visitors with its unique character. Starting from Victoria (Rabat), the heart of the island, and following an approximately 11-kilometre path of Medium difficulty to Ramla Bay is a wonderful way to experience Gozo's rural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. During this 2-3 hour walk, you'll encounter fields bordered by stone walls, charming villages, and perhaps friendly goats accompanying you along the way. Don't hesitate to ask locals for directions; sometimes they are the best guides. As water sources on the route can be limited, it's important to take plenty of water with you.

When you arrive at Ramla Bay, the famous reddish sands and a deep blue sea in the shadow of Calypso's Cave, which featured in Homer's Odyssey, will greet you. Swimming and sunbathing in this mythological atmosphere will make you forget all the tiredness of the day.

Where to Stay in Gozo? For an unforgettable stay in Gozo, I highly recommend the traditional "farmhouses" (which means farmhouse in English, but in Malta, it refers to restored, characterful country houses), often with private pools, located in inland villages like Xaghra, Gharb, or San Lawrenz. With their thick stone walls and rustic decor, these houses offer a true oasis of peace. If you prefer to be by the sea, you can find small hotels and stylish apartments in more lively bays like Marsalforn or Xlendi.

5. Pantelleria, Italy: In the Heart of the Volcano, Natural Spa Delights

Cala Gadir on Pantelleria, Italy

Summer 2025 on Pantelleria: A morning walk on lava stones, a time for purification with nature in the warm waters of Cala Gadir.

The volcanic island of Pantelleria, situated between Sicily and Tunisia, is also known as the "Black Pearl of the Mediterranean," a title it thoroughly deserves. The climb to the island's highest point, the 836-metre Montagna Grande, is a challenging activity (Medium-Hard difficulty) requiring good fitness, but the panoramic view over the entire island from the summit is worth all the effort. Walking on volcanic rocks, you feel the island's wild and untouched nature to your very core. Sturdy hiking boots are a must for this climb.

After this energetic walk, one of the best places to pamper your body is Cala Gadir. Here, thanks to the hot thermal waters mãeixing with the sea, you can enjoy a natural spa experience. Sitting in the small pools among the rocks, watching the sea while feeling the relaxing effect of the thermal water, is one of the unique privileges Pantelleria offers.

Where to Stay in Pantelleria? To truly experience the spirit of Pantelleria, you should stay in a "dammuso" (traditional stone houses unique to Pantelleria), the island's iconic domed-roof structures made of volcanic stone. Many of these buildings, often set amidst olive groves and vineyards with stunning sea views, offer a unique atmosphere. In settlements like Scauri or Khamma, you can find many dammusi converted into luxury boutique hotels or offered as rental homes; I can't think of a better option to feel the island's authentic fabric.

6. Elba, Italy: Historic Trails and Crystal Waters

Fetovaia Beach on Elba, Italy

Summer 2025 on Elba Island: A morning walk amidst greenery, followed by afternoon enjoyment at Fetovaia Beach under colourful umbrellas.

Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, is known not only as Napoleon's island of exile but also for its magnificent beaches and lush green nature. Starting the day with an Easy-Medium difficulty walk on the old miners' paths around the town of Capoliveri opens a window onto the island's interesting past and offers breathtaking sea views. These trails provide an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the workers who once carried iron ore.

To cool off after the walk, Fetovaia Beach is, in my opinion, the most delightful. With its fine golden sand and crystal-clear, shallow waters, it resembles a natural swimming pool. It is particularly noteworthy for its sheltered position, even on windy days. A "schiaccia briaca" (also known as 'drunken cake' due to the Aleatico wine it contains), an Elban speciality cake with figs and walnuts from Capoliveri's charming bakeries, will sweeten your walking breaks.

Where to Stay in Elba? For accommodation in Elba, boutique hotels in the historic centre of a lively and charming town like Capoliveri, or sea-view apartments on the town's slopes, are very appealing. Other popular towns like Porto Azzurro or Marciana Marina also offer options for every budget. For those seeking a quieter holiday, hotels or rental villas close to beaches like Fetovaia or Cavoli on the island's west coast, nestled in nature, can be wonderful havens for those wishing to fully enjoy the island's tranquillity.

7. Lefkada, Greece: The Most Beautiful Form of Ionian Blue

Egremni Beach on Lefkada, Greece

Descend 300 steps on the Greek island of Lefkada to meet the azure waves at Egremni Beach: an unforgettable seaside escape for summer 2025.

Lefkada, although connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, possesses a true island identity and is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the Ionian Sea. To see that the island is more than just beaches, you can take an Easy walk in the morning to explore Karya, one of the traditional mountain villages in the interior, and its surroundings. With its stone houses, narrow streets, and locals sitting under the ancient plane tree in the square, Karya offers an authentic Greek island experience.

In the afternoon, you should head to the world-famous Egremni Beach on the west coast of the island. Reached after descending about 300 steps, this beach is a true paradise on earth with its white sands beneath steep cliffs and incredible shades of turquoise. Although climbing back up the steps requires some effort, the view you'll witness will be worth all the fatigue. It's worth mentioning that there's a small paid car park before descending to the beach.

Where to Stay in Lefkada? On Lefkada, private villas with pools and magnificent Ionian Sea views are particularly popular on the west coast; watching the sunset from here offers an unforgettable experience. In charming coastal villages like Agios Nikitas or in areas berühmten for windsurfing like Vasiliki, you can find more boutique hotels and studio apartments. If you wish to soak up the authentic atmosphere of mountain villages like Karya, you can also consider staying in restored stone houses; this allows for a deeper insight into the island's local life.

8. Crete, Greece: The Call of the Canyons, The Embrace of the Sea

Rocky coast of Chania on Crete, Greece

Listen to the story of the waves in Crete in summer 2025! Scenes where nature and history intertwine on the rocky shores of Chania await you.

Crete, Greece's largest island, possesses a wealth that is endless to explore. For those seeking a true nature adventure, the Samaria Gorge (16 km, a Hard trail) offers a unique experience. Walking the entire length of Samaria, one of Europe's longest canyons, requires good fitness and an early start. This trek, extending from the Omalos Plateau to Agia Roumeli, will provide unforgettable moments as you pass through narrow passages and among giant rocks. To avoid the scorching sun, aim to either hike upwards from Agia Roumeli (a shorter route) or catch the first bus to Omalos. Don't forget to take plenty of water and energy-boosting snacks.

The Agia Roumeli beach, reached after this epic walk, is a reward that will wash away your fatigue with the cool waters of the Libyan Sea. Resting while gazing at the imposing exit of the canyon is one of those unique moments Crete offers.

Where to Stay in Crete? If you plan to walk the Samaria Gorge, you can consider small, family-run guesthouses in Agia Roumeli to rest for a night. Generally, Crete offers a very wide range of accommodation, from stylish boutique hotels in cities with historic Venetian harbours like Chania and Rethymno, to studio apartments and luxury resorts in quiet coves on the south coast. My heart usually leans towards the restored mansions in Chania's labyrinthine streets, which combine historical fabric with modern comfort; that atmosphere is something else entirely.

9. Iles Lavezzi, France (off the coast of Corsica): Wild Dance of Granite and Turquoise

Granite rocks and turquoise sea at Iles Lavezzi, France

For those wanting to be alone with nature off the coast of Corsica in summer 2025, the granite beauty and clear sea of Iles Lavezzi are a true haven of peace.

The Lavezzi archipelago, reached by boats from Bonifacio in southern Corsica, is an almost untouched natural wonder in the middle of the Mediterranean. The largest island, Lavezzi, is famous for its sculptural granite rock formations shaped by wind and waves. An Easy 1-2 hour nature walk on the island's inland paths is ideal for discovering its different coves and interesting rock formations, accompanied by the distinctive scent of the Mediterranean maquis.

After the walk, the joy of swimming in one of the turquoise-watered coves surrounded by giant granite boulders, like Cala di u Grecu, is unparalleled. Remember that there are no facilities (cafes, toilets, etc.) on Lavezzi, so you must bring your own water, food, and sun protection when visiting the island. Boats from Bonifacio usually arrive in the morning and return in the afternoon, so it's wise to plan accordingly.

Where to Stay Around Iles Lavezzi? As Iles Lavezzi is a protected natural area, there is no accommodation on the islands themselves. The best option for visiting these unique islands is to stay in the charming town of Bonifacio in southern Corsica. Boutique hotels in Bonifacio's historic centre (Haute Ville), built on steep cliffs, or more modern establishments in the port area, offer a perfect starting point for your day trip to Lavezzi; waking up in that historic setting adds a different meaning to the day.

10. Sicily, Italy: The Power of Etna, The Magic of Taormina

Mazzarò Beach in Taormina, Sicily

Mazzarò Beach on the coast of Taormina, Sicily, filled with colourful umbrellas, is an ideal stop for sunbathing and cooling off in summer 2025.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is a land of discovery in itself. For me, one of the first images that comes to mind when I think of Sicily is Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano. Walking on Etna's foothills, in a volcanic landscape reminiscent of the moon's surface (difficulty varies from Easy to Hard depending on the chosen route), is truly an extraordinary experience. Being on the slopes of this colossal mountain in the early morning, with the smell of ash filling the air and the occasional deep rumbles, is both thrilling and a little intimidating. If you wish to climb to higher craters, you can join guided tours. As the weather on Etna can be very changeable depending on the altitude, it's wise to dress in layers and bring a windbreaker.

After the volcanic impact of Etna, relaxing on the beaches of Taormina, the jewel of the island's east coast, creates a wonderful contrast. Especially enjoying the Mediterranean at an iconic spot like Isola Bella or on the long sandy beaches of Giardini Naxos, with Etna's smoking peak on one side and the deep blue Ionian Sea on the other... Shaking off your fatigue on the beach in the afternoon while sipping an ice-cold "granita" (a type of fruit sorbet) made from famous Sicilian lemons makes this experience unforgettable.

Where to Stay in Sicily (Etna & Taormina area)? If you want to breathe in Etna's mystical atmosphere more closely, you can stay in "agriturismo" accommodations (a farm-stay concept unique to Italy, often involving agricultural activities) on the volcano's slopes or in boutique hotels among vineyards. In Taormina, there are many options, from luxury hotels on Corso Umberto to charming guesthouses in the side streets and hotels overlooking Mazzarò Bay. In my opinion, boutique hotels within walking distance of Taormina's historic centre, in a quieter location, perhaps with a small garden, are ideal for those who want to experience the city's magic while also seeking some tranquillity.

11. Bozcaada, Turkey: The Gentle Breath of the Aegean, The Bounty of Vineyards

A view from the heart of Bozcaada: History, sea, and Aegean architecture call those seeking a peaceful and authentic holiday in summer 2025.

A view from the heart of Bozcaada: History, sea, and Aegean architecture call those seeking a peaceful and authentic holiday in summer 2025.

Rounding off my list is a gem from my homeland’s waters, the Aegean pearl: Bozcaada. With its unique atmosphere, quality wines, tranquillity, and beautiful beaches, Bozcaada is one of the best places to experience the "morning walk, afternoon beach" theme. Starting the day with an Easy walk around the island's historic castle or through the cobblestone streets of the old Greek Quarter, adorned with bougainvillaea, is a wonderful feeling. For those looking for a slightly longer route, a walk towards Polente Lighthouse and the windmills, especially around sunset, also offers unique views.

In the afternoon, you can cool off at Bozcaada's famous Ayazma Beach. With its golden sands and ice-cold but crystal-clear sea, Ayazma is one of the island's most popular spots. For those seeking a quieter alternative, Akvaryum Bay or Habbele Beach can also be considered. Enjoying the cool waters of the Aegean in Bozcaada's peaceful atmosphere while sipping one of the island's quality wines... This is truly a renewal.

Where to Stay in Bozcaada? When thinking of accommodation in Bozcaada, the first things that come to mind are the boutique hotels and guesthouses in the island's centre, especially in the Greek Quarter, converted from restored old stone houses. Many of these establishments boast tasteful decor that reflects the island's spirit. For those seeking quieter accommodation amidst vineyards, vineyard hotels located in the island's interior, producing their own wines, are also a magnificent alternative. Having breakfast overlooking the vineyards in the morning and tasting the estate's own wines in the evening are just a few of the elements that enrich the Bozcaada experience.

Travel Notes: A Few Extra Tips for This Adventure

  • Footwear Choice: For morning walks, make sure to get a good pair of hiking shoes or at least sturdy, non-slip trainers. This is very important on volcanic terrain or stony paths.
  • Water and Snacks: Before every walk, don't forget to take at least 1.5 - 2 litres of water and small energy-boosting snacks like dried fruits or fresh fruit. This is crucial, especially in hot weather and on routes without water sources.
  • Sun Protection: The Mediterranean sun can be very strong, especially in summer. A hat, high-factor sunscreen, and good quality sunglasses should be your essentials for both walks and the beach.
  • Dress Light, Layer Up: Opt for layered and breathable clothing for walks that might start in the cool morning and continue into the midday heat. For the beach, a quick-drying, lightweight towel and perhaps a small beach umbrella will make things easier.
  • Local Flavours: Don't leave any island without tasting its unique local delicacies. Fresh fruit from the morning market, a local cheese, or a seafood dish for dinner will become unforgettable memories of your trip.
  • Be Flexible: Making plans is good, but sometimes the best discoveries happen in unplanned moments. Deviating from a path, discovering a new cove on a local's recommendation... Be open to the surprises of the Mediterranean!
  • Notebook and Pen: I always carry a small notebook with me. Jotting down what I see, feel, or a new flavour I taste is a great way to relive those memories later. You'll accumulate so many note-worthy memories on these islands!
  • Route Planning: If you consider preparing an interactive map or a downloadable PDF guide including the routes mentioned in this article and more, you would greatly help readers plan their own "step-by-step island discovery"; this could also increase the time spent on your site.

Chart your course for 2025, take your morning steps in the cool of the Aegean or the green of the Ionian, and in the afternoon, surrender yourself to the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. Each of these unique islands promises unforgettable discoveries and peaceful moments for you, the seeker of Mediterranean islands walking and beach recommendations. Happy travels!
