Especially that night we witnessed a baby loggerhead's first, tentative steps towards the sea… The wonder and excitement in Berc's eyes conveyed the importance of nature conservation to him more powerfully than words ever could.

He was particularly lost in the section where he could closely examine sea turtle shells. As he scanned every detail on a shell with curious eyes, his question to the guide, "Does each line represent a year of its life?" made everyone smile and even momentarily surprised the guide. These moments are the most beautiful proof of how a place gains value not just for its beauty, but for the new windows it opens in your child's mind.

"Dad, is this beach only accessible with special permission because of the turtles?" That was Berc's first curious question when we arrived in Dalyan. Indeed, İztuzu Beach, with its vast golden sands, captivates not only us but, above all, the Caretta Caretta sea turtles. It is one of their most important and faithful nesting grounds in the Mediterranean. Here, on the protected sands of İztuzu, Berc had the chance to see a turtle nest for the first time in his life; his astonishment and silent admiration at that moment were priceless.

As our boat, departing from the labyrinthine reed beds of the Dalyan River, glided towards İztuzu, the stories told by our guide and now friend, Mehmet Abi, fired Berc's imagination. "You know, Berc," Mehmet Abi had said, "these big turtles travel thousands of kilometres and return every year to lay their eggs on the exact same beach, right here, just like we return home." This comparison forged a very special bond in Berc's little heart towards the turtles.

That evening in Dalyan, as Berc lay in bed, he asked with sparkling eyes, "Will we see turtles again tomorrow?" and could hardly wait for morning. When we arrived early at İztuzu the next day, we quietly passed by three different protected turtle nests. His question at the start of the day, "Are they sleeping soundly in there now?" was the most beautiful proof of how real and impactful this experience was for him.
